Biography

My name is Siqi Wang, and in this term I'll be working with Dr. Noé in the Laser Teaching Center. I'm an exchange student from Nanjing University in China and I'm majoring in physics. Although I'll stay here for only 4 months, it's still great to work on something with John. This is my third year in college and I believe this will be the most different year of all my college years.

Well, I have to admit that physics was not my first choice when I applied for a university. I love science, especially natural science. I was always attracted by the mystery of life. Even, Schroedinger asked himself "what is life?" And I'm more curious in the question of how. How life works? When I was young, I was obsessed in carrying out my own anatomy on some insects. The complexity and delicacy of life astonished me so much. Then why do I choose physics? It's because of its simplicity. My parents are both biologist. Their laboratory was used to be my playground. When I actually started studying biology, I found it not as fun as what I used to think. The complexity of biology this time scared me. What I want to do is to use simple principles to derive all the complexity. Then my father asked me: "Why don't you try physics?" Yes, physics, beautiful laws and principles. I enjoy the feeling of knowing the mechanism of different phenomenon, and it's a great fun to find out what is "behind the scene".

Truly, I have been wondering what the world really is for a long time. So do all the scientists. Presumably, climbing to the shoulder of giants must be a tough job and standing on the shoulder of giants must be tempting. Therefore, I always remain humble and hungry on the road of pursuing the true knowledge of our physical world. It is still far away from understanding the world deeply. And physics has changed my way of thinking profoundly. I think the trick here is to simplify and find out what is in general. Physics is like traveling to me. I love both of them. And they all provide me tons of thousands of ways to experience the difference. Different fields in physics are just like different people. They "think" in different ways, but they usually have something in common. And you can always find different interpretations of one act.

Actually, I should confess that I don't have many glorious deeds to write about. I want to do something in physical biology in the future. So that both of my dreams, exploring the universe and explaining life forms will come true. And I don't think I'm a genius. So do other people. But it's true that I'm a diligent student. I don't admire those who do the best, because I want to be one of them. This "esteem" always serves as the motivation to push me forward. I always want to be one of the best, except in sports. It seems to me that I don't have that kind of gift for sports. I enjoying sports, but cannot play well, just like singing to me. I enjoy it, while anyone else who hear me don't.

Well, that's the end of it. That's what I'm going to say about myself. I appreciate anyone who can read to the end of it. It's not that easy for me to figure out who I am, really. Thanks for your time and wish you good luck.
