Image Processing Software
Scion Corporation [12] provides a free download of Scion Image
Beta 4.02 for Windows Acquisition and Analysis Software, a windows
version of NIH Image Software [13], a public domain image
processing and analysis program for the Macintosh developed by the
Research Services Branch (RSB) of the National Institute of Mental
Health. Scion Image allows TIFF files to be imported and manipulated
in all the ways necessary in this experiment. Multiple images can be
added, subtracted, multiplied, and divided by one another or by a
constant value. The intensity values of individual pixels can be
determined, and an adjustable scale of false-coloring can group pixels
of the same intensity value by color. A histogram can be created for
the image in its entirety, graphing the amount of pixels of each value
present in the file. A profile can also be made of a single straight
line of pixels, showing their relative values in a graph. In short,
the software is capable of every function required by the rubrics of
Hielscher etal, [1] and Yao etal, [14] for the
creation of a full 4x4 Mueller matrix.
The Scion software was installed and run in the same donated
Pentium-1/166 computer used to operate the camera.
