Measuring the Eigenfunctions of a Rectangular Microwave Cavity

Project Overview


I measured the 210 and 220 TM modes of a rectangular cavity resonator using a vector network analyser.

The cavity was made of aluminum with a copper base and top. The dimensions of the cavity are 10.942 cm x 5.104 cm x 1.025 cm.

Calculations


I wrote a Maple program that plots various TM modes for a rectangular cavity and calculates corresponding resonant frequencies. The program can be seen here:

To get an idea of the distribution of resonant frequencies, I calculated the resonant frequences up to the 666 mode. They are shown here:


The calculated values for the 210 and 220 modes are:

f(210)=6.031 GHz

f(220=6.481 GHz
